Social and human rights organizations marched Sunday in Santiago to honor victims of Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship, a rally that concluded with violent repression by Carabineros and multiple arrests, according to local media.
The police operation took place on the outskirts of the General Cemetery, where the pilgrimage was being held. Among the 37 individuals detained was Benjamín Lillo, director of the community media outlet Canal 3 de La Victoria, local reports confirmed.

This year’s commemoration marks 53 years since the September 11, 1973, military coup that overthrew the democratically elected government of Salvador Allende. Data from the Valech Commission document more than 40,000 victims of human rights violations throughout Pinochet’s regime, which lasted from 1973 to 1990.

Sunday’s pilgrimage was convened by human rights organizations, the Frente Amplio (FA), and the Communist Party (PC).
