In February, Martin Soto was abducted by ICE on his way to buy diapers for his 11-month-old son. The 30-year-old father of two has been in ICE custody since, first detained at Newark’s Delaney Hall before being transferred to Elizabeth Detention Center. At Delaney, Soto helped lead a hunger and labor strike to draw public attention to the brutal conditions of ICE detention. When Soto was kidnapped, his wife, Gabriela Soto, was pregnant with their third child. She has since miscarried – a direct result of the stress of her husband in solidarity confinement. At Sunday’s La Defensa del Pueblo summit, Soto details the mistreatment both he and other detainees are living under.
