The Dominican Republic announced Saturday the start of construction of a 14.5-kilometer perimeter fence in Jimaní, Independencia province, as part of its border control strategy with Haiti.
The project is the second stage of the infrastructure and was led by Defense Minister Lieutenant General Carlos Antonio Fernández Onofre, accompanied by Army Commanding General Major General Jimmy Arias Grullón and other civil and military authorities.

The new section will stand 13 feet high and will include six surveillance towers, 35 culverts, and patrol roads seven meters wide on both sides of the structure. The installations are intended to ease the mobility of military units and strengthen surveillance in the area.
Authorities said the work is especially important because of its location in the Enriquillo Basin, facing Lake Azuey, also known as Lake del Fondo, an area considered vulnerable to the irregular trafficking of goods and other illicit activities.

Defense Minister Fernández Onofre said the infrastructure is part of the “Frontera Fuerte” strategy promoted by President Luis Abinader, which also combines technology, surveillance, mobility and military presence in the border zone.
Jimaní is a key point for trade between the Dominican Republic and Haiti because it hosts one of the main binational markets and has a high flow of cargo vehicles.
During the day, Fernández Onofre and representatives of the Migration Policy Observatory, led by executive president Miguel Franjul, also toured the new fence section being built in Dajabón, where they verified progress.
The Dominican government said expanding the fence, together with surveillance and patrol systems, will strengthen territorial control and the operational capabilities of the Armed Forces at the main points along the border with Haiti.
