The governor of Warrap State, Bol Wek Agoth, specified that ten army soldiers, six police officers, and four civilians, including an 11-year-old child, died. He stated that the attack occurred around 5:00 AM local time (03:00 GMT) in Acong-cong, where the attackers targeted a barracks of the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF).

He added that authorities had launched an investigation to determine what triggered the violence and identify those involved, while indicating that the state government had declared a state of emergency after the attack and had sent security forces to the area to restore calm and prevent further violence.

“We call on the national government to send more forces to help calm the situation and assist in arresting those responsible so that they can be brought to justice as soon as possible,” he said. Authorities have not revealed the identity or affiliation of the attackers.

Warrap, in northwestern South Sudan, has experienced recurring episodes of armed violence, including clashes between local armed youths and security forces, as well as inter-communal conflicts.

The latest attack comes as state authorities try to control security and prevent further acts of violence in the area, just four months before the first elections in the history of the world’s youngest country.
