The August evaluations specifically targeted personnel within the Joint Chiefs of Staff, particularly senior commanders with knowledge of reserve levels, including long-range missile inventories and Patriot interceptor numbers. Chairman General Dan Caine was the sole exemption from the screening.

Internal Pentagon and Army investigators handled the polygraphs, ruling out FBI involvement. While none of the subjects failed the questions designed to detect leaks, investigators considered the possibility of a foreign spy collaborating with an external power, which triggered heightened alerts within the intelligence community.
In response, spokesman Sean Parnell declined to comment on specific personnel matters but stressed that the department treats any release of classified information with the utmost gravity, labeling it a criminal act and treason against the armed forces. Parnell additionally dismissed as untrue certain prior statements by U.S. military officials, including remarks recorded in the Secretary of Defense’s Order Book that questioned the wisdom of prolonging the conflict due to its adverse outcomes.
