The catastrophic floods in Nepal have resulted in 1,290 deaths and thousands missing, as rescue efforts continue to identify and recover the victims.
The devastating floods in Nepal, triggered by the sudden rise of the Bhotekoshi River, have left a grim toll. As of Friday, the official death count stands at 1,290 people, with 4,798 still missing. This update was provided by the Nepalese police, highlighting the severe impact on the mountainous regions, particularly in Rasuwa district.
Among the confirmed fatalities are 32 children, 250 women, and 427 men. Additionally, 532 partially recovered remains have been found in the heavily affected areas.

The disaster has also claimed the lives of two people in hospitals. Despite the tragedy, rescue teams have successfully saved 8,197 people alive.
To manage the identification process, the police have collected 1,143 DNA samples from the deceased and 711 from their families. 926 bodies have been buried by local authorities, who are working tirelessly on the ground. The sheer loss of life and the high number of unaccounted individuals, including 2,369 men and 478 women, keep the search and rescue operations active.
The Nepalese police are prioritizing the systematic collection of genetic evidence and medical care for the injured, a crucial effort in the zones declared as emergency areas.

The cooperation between nations in the Global South has also played a significant role. A third batch of emergency aid from the People’s Republic of China arrived in Katmandu. This aid includes modular metal bridges for quick installation to restore destroyed roads, freezers for preserving bodies, medical supplies to prevent epidemics, and various essential items for the affected population.
Alongside the humanitarian supplies, ten Chinese experts in DNA testing and forensic medicine arrived in Nepal. Coordinated by China’s Ministry of Public Security, this team will work with local authorities to speed up the identification of fatal victims. The logistics involve transporting the bridge components through the border port connecting the two countries. Beijing’s support extends to technical and hydrological assistance, sharing strategic data with Katmandu.
