Iceland voters reject EU talks

On 30 August, voters in Iceland voted against the resumption of the country’s suspended EU membership talks. The 52.8 — 47.2% result came from a massive 82.5% turnout, higher than at any Icelandic election since 2009. The vote comes as a blow to an EU establishment hoping for an easy win that would shore up its legitimacy at a time when the NATO and EU-supported Ukraine-Russia rages on, as well as Israel’s genocide in Gaza fuelled by EU military trade with Israel.

Iceland’s ‘no camp’ rejects the EU

The BBC and other establishment media have focused on the issue of fishing rights as the key driver of the ‘No’ vote. No doubt this was significant.

But Iceland also took part in the boycott of Eurovision over the contest’s decision to allow genocidal Israel to participate. It also joined South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice. The people of Iceland have held repeated mass protests against the genocide, demanding that their government cut all ties with the terror state. They have protested in large numbers against the illegal waged US-Israel war against Iran.

The EU’s shameless collusion in Israel’s genocide, US-Israel aggression against Iran and the Ukraine-Russian war certainly played a significant role. This may have been ignored by Western ‘MSM’, but global-south media have recognised it in their coverage.

Whatever your feelings about the UK’s relationship with the EU, Iceland’s ‘no’ vote was a blow to the EU’s war ambitions and imperialism.
