São Paulo delivery drivers kicked off a one-day nationwide strike on Tuesday, dubbed “Breque dos Apps” or “Hitting the brakes on the apps,” to demand pay protections and other basic labor rights including minimum fares for short deliveries and paid time off. Drivers say app-based plans and promotions cut into their earnings and impose unfavorable labor conditions for workers who have become essential to the functioning of urban life in the country. Demonstrators are also calling for corporate transparency over account suspensions and other penalties imposed by platforms like iFood and Keeta, with the action already pressuring Brazil’s Ministry of Labor to open an investigation into whether corporate offers of driver bonuses during the strike violate the law. Demonstrations were also been reported in Salvador, Feira de Santana, Campinas, Sorocaba, Anapolis, Goiania and Braslia.
