Chile’s Coordinating Assembly of Secondary Students (ACES) has called for a protest this Thursday, September 3, at Metro Baquedano in Santiago, near the square that served as the epicenter of the 2019 anti-neoliberal uprisings, to defend Chile’s future against a Government they say serves the wealthy.

This marks the latest student mobilization since President José Antonio Kast took office, following a previous march on April 29 against Kast’s adjustment policies, which include budget cuts affecting education and school meals, and a May 14 protest rejecting 14 Government measures, among them the elimination of food programs from the National Board of School Aid and Scholarships.

On that May occasion, student groups warned that cutting basic benefits directly harms vulnerable families amid a complex national economic situation.

The anti-capitalist and anti-imperialist youth organizations Vencer and Rebelión have called to strengthen and extend the September 3 mobilization nationwide, aiming to advance toward a National Strike against Kast’s economic and repressive agenda, as well as against the far-right Madrid Forum scheduled for the 3rd and 4th in Santiago.

According to the student groups, street mobilization is the path to counter the right’s plans and agenda. They emphasized that the protest should be taken up in every high school, university, and study center to mobilize against the Government and its international allies, who they say serve imperialist interests and seek to further precarious living conditions for working families.

The students also underscore that the Government uses the banner of security solely to acquire social control tools, focusing on criminalizing youth through punitive projects such as “Protected Schools” and pushing an authoritarian constitutional reform that would grant exceptional powers to sustain what they describe as a “civil dictatorship” for eight months.
