Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema was sworn in for a second term on Tuesday at Lusaka’s Heroes National Stadium, following his Aug. 13 election victory over 12 other presidential candidates.

The ceremony drew the presidents of Zimbabwe, Kenya, Botswana, Tanzania and Namibia, among other leaders.

In his address, the president pledged to more than double the economy by boosting agriculture, mining and energy, while extending social protection to the most vulnerable sectors. He asserted that economic growth must translate into tangible benefits for families, including education, jobs, market access for farmers, capital for entrepreneurs, business opportunities for women, and a better future for every child.

Hichilema framed his first term as a period dedicated to reestablishing stability and laying the foundations for development. He called on Zambians to increase national production and support businesses, investments and exports.

The head of state underscored that ideological diversity should not be criminalized. Democracy does not require everyone to agree, he argued, adding that voters who chose other candidates are not the enemy. He described them as fellow Zambians and emphasized that victory must demonstrate the character of the nation they are building.
