The arrest was confirmed by Rodrigo Reyes Mugüerza, Secretary General of the State Government, as part of the deployment of state and federal security forces following the attack.

“The attack was caused by explosives placed in a private vehicle that had been reported stolen in the state of Jalisco, and the target was the Ojocaliente Police Headquarters,” the state government reported.

The explosion occurred Sunday night in front of the police station and left at least 10 people injured, two of them in critical condition. Among the injured were two municipal police officers, one with hearing loss and the other suffering from shock. In addition, the explosive damaged 13 vehicles and 17 nearby homes.

The Zacatecas Attorney General , Cristian Paul Camacho, explained in a radio interview that the attack involved an improvised explosive device (IED) consisting of a metal tube filled with compressed gunpowder. The vehicle used had been reported stolen in an armed robbery in April 2016 in the neighboring state of Jalisco.

The text reads, “Attorney General Cristian Paul Camacho Osnaya participated in the State Peace Roundtable held in Ojocaliente, where state and federal authorities followed up on the events that occurred over the weekend.”

Regarding the motive, Reyes Mugüerza explained that it could presumably be a reaction to recent arrests and operations against members of criminal groups. The official reaffirmed the institutional commitment to containing the groups vying for territorial control in the region.

Given the seriousness of the events, the Mexican government’s Security Cabinet activated a coordinated operation. Institutions such as the Ministry of Security, the Ministry of Defense, the Navy, the National Guard, and the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) are collaborating to clarify the facts, identify, and arrest those responsible. The cabinet added that authorities from all three levels of government are reinforcing security operations in the area to protect the population.

As a security measure, the municipality suspended classes and canceled FERTU 2026, the Regional Prickly Pear and Grape Fair, while the State Civil Protection Coordination is supporting affected families and operations continue in southeastern Zacatecas.
