The leader added that this protection is showed in the start of the school year for more than 1.5 million students—an achievement the empire sought to prevent with its plan to strangle the country.

Diaz-Canel, accompanied by Prime Minister Manuel Marrero, attended the main ceremony marking the start of the 2026-2027 school year in Havana’s Prado district—the very place where the National Apostle, Jose Marti, was educated.

The Caribbean nation’s Minister of Education, Naima Ariatne Trujillo, emphasized that the academic year is beginning amidst adversity, yet with the awareness that the people do not give up and that education in Cuba is non-negotiable.

Meanwhile, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez noted on his X profile that the return to the classroom shows the determination and joint effort of the Party, the Government, and the people to keep the vitality of essential services and a right guaranteed free of charge in the country for nearly seven decades.

“No energy blockade, threats, intensified embargo, or secondary sanctions will stop us from continuing to preserve and develop the achievements of the Revolution, attained under the leadership of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz,” the Foreign Minister declared.

To preserve this priority, the Cuban government has allocated a budget of 71.983 billion pesos to the education sector for 2026; this equates to 20 percent of total state spending and represents one of the country’s largest social protection allocations, surpassed only by public health.
