Family and community members in Gary, Indiana are demanding answers after 67-year-old grandfather Kenneth Williams Sr. was shot and killed by police on Friday night while working security at a local transit center. Police say they were responding to reports of Williams Sr. exhibiting “unusual and erratic behavior.” A total of nine officers – six Gary Police and three Lake County Sheriff’s deputies – discharged their weapons, and all have been placed on administrative leave. It comes just three days after power was fully restored to Gary, Lake County’s only majority Black city, following a two-week blackout caused by windstorms on August 11. No officers were injured in the encounter, and police say an autopsy on Williams Sr.’s body will be completed on Tuesday.
