Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian asserted that his country will prevail in its confrontation with the United States during his meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Kyrgyzstan. “I am convinced that we will win,” the Iranian president declared.

Pezeshkian referred to the Memorandum of Understanding signed in June between Washington and Tehran. This document governs bilateral relations following the resumption of attacks on Monday, after a hiatus of more than a month in the conflict initiated by the US and Israel on February 28, which has now exceeded six months with hostilities suspended. “If the United States returns to fulfilling the obligations included in the memorandum, then we will also respect them,” the Iranian leader stated.

Furthermore, the Iranian president denounced the unilateral actions of the White House. “They killed our scientists, our innocent schoolchildren, and our commanders. This cannot be justified,” he stated, criticizing Washington for acting this way while claiming to defend democracy and human rights.

To counter this policy, Pezeshkian believed that with the support of Russia and the SCO members, the Islamic Republic could circumvent the unilateral measures adopted by Washington. “I am certain that we must confront the unilateral US policy. And we will be able to neutralize the sanctions they impose against us. In forums like the SCO and other organizations, we can circumvent all sanctions and cooperate multilaterally,” he said.

For his part, Putin thanked and supported Tehran. “Russia admires your courage and stoicism in fighting for your national interests. In this difficult period, we are trying to help you in every way possible. We have already discussed this. We are already supplying what you need,” noted the Russian leader, who has provided support to Iran both in combating sanctions and at the UN.

The SCO summit, which brings together powers such as China, Russia, India, Pakistan, and Iran, along with Central Asian nations, will begin on August 31 in Bishkek. The Iranian government indicated that the president will hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts, although it did not specify with whom.

The bloc focuses its activities on political, economic, and security cooperation, including the fight against terrorism, separatism, and extremism. Unlike NATO, the SCO lacks a mutual defense clause and adopts its decisions by consensus.

The agenda is dominated by the wars in Ukraine and the Islamic Republic, where renewed US economic pressure against Iran persists. It is worth recalling that the bloc’s last summit, held last year in Tianjin, China, concluded with a joint declaration by the leaders against “external interference and disruptions to international trade.”
