Havana, Sep 1 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez reaffirmed the urgent need of strengthening international order for nuclear disarmament and the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

On his X profile, the Foreign Minister made this call amidst rising international tensions and a renewed, unbridled arms race.

Rodriguez acknowledged the significant contribution of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) to this goal, noting that it is the first instrument to categorically ban nuclear weapons under international law.

He also emphasized Cuba’s commitment to the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, the provisions of which complement the aim of the TPNW and efforts toward achieving a world free of nuclear weapons.

The UN General Assembly declared August 29 as the International Day against Nuclear Tests, aiming to draw global attention to the gravity of the issue and urge unified action.

The date was first observed in 2010 through activities, conferences, symposiums, exhibitions, and television programs, among other initiatives.

Subsequently, the United Nations established the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, to be observed on September 26.

Both dates have fostered a collaborative environment for achieving a nuclear-weapon-free world; however, challenges remain, as the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (1996)—the instrument that would fully ban such tests—has yet to enter into force.
