Vladivostok, Russia, Sept 1 (Prensa Latina) The risks of escalating tensions in the Arctic are increasing due to the growing militarization of the region by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Russian diplomat Vladislav Maslennikov said.

The director of the European Affairs Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, speaking this Tuesday at the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF), highlighted the course taken by NATO member states toward greater militarization of the Arctic.

“In the high latitudes, which were previously distinguished exclusively by peaceful and constructive cooperation, political and military tensions are now increasing, and the risks of unintentional escalation are intensifying,” Maslennikov said.

The 11th Eastern Economic Forum is taking place from September 1 to 4 in the Russian city of Vladivostok, in the Far East.
