Cuban chess players achieved an outstanding performance in the V Panama Open Chess Tournament, which brought together 83 competitors from 15 nations.

Cuban chess players excelled at the 5th Panama Open, a tournament that concluded in the Aurora Room of the Torres de Alba Hotel in the Panamanian capital.

Cuban Grandmaster (GM) Elier Miranda took third place out of 83 participants, totaling seven points in the nine rounds played using the Swiss system.

First place went to Argentinian Andrés Carlos Obregón with 7.5 points, and second to Colombian Sergio Barrientos with seven points, who won on tiebreaks.

The Cuban contingent also included FIDE Master (FM) Jean Marco Cruz, who finished fifth with 6.5 points, surpassing higher-rated players. International Master (IM) Michel Alejandro Díaz finished sixth and GM Ermes Espinosa Veloz seventh, both with six points.

The text reads, “Cuban crowned Pan American Junior Chess Champion. The island’s representative also earned the title of International Master at the tournament.”

According to the local federation, this presence confirmed the strength of the island’s chess school in a tournament that included representatives from Argentina, the Bahamas, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru, Trinidad and Tobago, the United States, and Panama.

Cuba also stood out in the women’s division with Grandmaster Maritza Arribas, while FIDE Master Karen Gutiérrez was part of the Caribbean delegation.

The tournament organized by the Panamanian Chess Federation was rated for the FIDE international Elo rating and used a classical time control of 90 minutes per player, with a 30-second increment per move.

Panama once again brought together renowned players from across the continent and allowed Cuban chess players to compete in a demanding international tournament, achieving top positions in the final standings.
