PM Pashinyan and President Aliyev Meet on Sidelines of Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit.
On Monday, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev agreed to continue joint efforts to “strengthen lasting peace” in the region and normalize relations between their countries.

This was stated in official releases issued by both sides following a meeting held on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit (SCO) in Kyrgyzstan.
Pashinyan and Aliyev also highlighted “the historic importance of the peace summit held in Washington on Aug. 8, 2025,” the joint declaration signed in the presence of U.S. President Donald Trump, as well as the start of Azerbaijani petroleum product exports to Armenia, among other steps taken to normalize relations.
“The leaders also welcomed contacts between the business communities and exchanged views on the possibilities of further expanding mutually beneficial economic, trade, and energy cooperation,” the statements said.

Last week, representatives of Azerbaijan and Armenia discussed cooperation on the export and import of electricity between the two countries.
This is another measure aimed at fostering trust between the two countries, which are negotiating the signing of a final peace treaty that is pending a constitutional referendum Pashinyan has yet to call.
The border between Armenia and Azerbaijan has remained closed since the first Nagorno-Karabakh war in 1994. The territory is now under Azerbaijani control. Several years ago, the two sides began taking steps to normalize their relations.
In 2025, the two countries signed a preliminary peace agreement at the White House as a sign of their commitment to continuing that process.
