Around 20,000 people have been forced to flee their homes in the Sudanese area of Geisan, bordering Ethiopia and recently seized by the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and its allies, amid an intensification of violence, a local NGO reported this Sunday.

“The number of displaced people is close to 20,000, including families, children, women and the elderly,” said the Geisan Emergency Room in a statement, specifying that the crisis is affecting the area known as City 12, in the southeastern state of Blue Nile, one of the main fronts of the war.
According to the organization, the displaced urgently need basic humanitarian assistance, specifically materials to build shelters, in addition to food aid, drinking water, health services and other basic necessities.
The Geisan area has recently been taken by the RSF and allied groups such as the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), which have intensified their offensive against the border areas with Ethiopia in the Blue Nile state.

In the last two days, this state has experienced a military escalation after attacks launched by paramilitaries and the SPLM-N against several areas, in their attempt to capture territory from the Army and establish new routes for supplying weapons and fighters, some of them from Ethiopia.
On Friday, the RSF announced the capture of the Bakuri and Sarkam military bases, southeast of Damazin, the capital of Blue Nile, while on Friday the Sudanese Army claimed to have shot down a drone in this state that was allegedly launched from Ethiopia, in the third launch of this type from the neighboring country.
Both the RSF and the SPLM-N are trying to take Damazin, one of the few strongholds of the Sudanese Armed Forces in Blue Nile and a key location to consolidate territory in this strategic border state, while fighting continues in neighboring regions such as vast Kordofan.
The war in Sudan broke out in April 2023 and, since then, tens of thousands of people have died and around 14 million others have been forced to flee their homes, making the country the scene of the worst displacement crisis on the planet.
