Mexico City’s public bicycle system, known as Ecobici, will increase its capacity by 60 percent, going from 9,308 to some 15,000 units, announced Head of Government Clara Brugada Molina.

In addition, 1,111 special bicycle parking stations will be installed, representing a 67 percent increase. All of this infrastructure will be distributed across nine boroughs, among them those located on the outskirts of the city, added the capital’s leader.

The project to expand the Ecobicis will begin in September. The location of this new equipment will be determined based on technical studies carried out by Mexico City’s Ministry of Mobility, indicated its head, Héctor Ulises García Nieto.

With this expansion —focused toward the capital’s outskirts— Ecobici will reach Iztapalapa, Iztacalco, and Tlalpan for the first time. Clara Brugada reported that, so far, the capital’s bicycle system has registered between 50,000 and 60,000 daily trips —equivalent to more than 24 million trips a year— with around 180,000 users. Each bicycle makes an average of 8.3 trips a day, compared to the 4.5 originally projected, which has increased the need for maintenance and spare parts, she added.

The system will also add a new maintenance center in the southern zone to reduce repair times. On this point, the mayor emphasized that broken-down or out-of-service bicycles will not be paid for to the operating company.

For his part, the Secretary of Administration and Finance, Juan Pablo de Botton Falcón, reported that the contract will have a term of 10 years, with an amount ranging between 978 million and 2.434 billion pesos, plus a fixed subsidy of 135 million pesos per year. At the end of the period, all of the infrastructure —bicycles, cycle stations, totems, and technology— will become the property of Mexico City.
