Palestinian researcher says Gaza rubble containing human remains is being removed without safeguards, potentially destroying evidence of alleged war crimes.
The Trump administration’s Gaza Peace Board is financing debris removal and road construction in the enclave, according to Palestinian researcher Muhammad Shehada, who says the operations are destroying rubble containing human remains and could erase evidence of alleged Israeli war crimes.

Shehada, a Palestinian researcher and writer affiliated with the European Council on Foreign Relations, said diplomatic representatives told him that Israel was secretly removing hundreds of thousands of tonnes of rubble containing bodies. He said the European Union had asked Israel whether human remains were being separated from the debris but received no response.
The Peace Board was established by US President Donald Trump to oversee the reconstruction of Gaza. According to reports cited by Shehada, the body is directing funds toward debris clearance, land leveling and road paving without procedures to isolate human remains or protect possible mass graves.

Debris removal and road construction
Shehada said evidence of the board’s financial involvement appears in tender specifications published on May 20, 2026, for land-leveling and compaction services.
Among the companies benefiting from the work is Israeli corporation Terra Firma, which uses heavy machinery to pulverize rubble and clear routes near Erez, according to the reports.
The Peace Board has been accused of paying, compensating, subsidizing and otherwise assisting Israeli companies, contractors, the military and government with debris removal and road-paving operations.
Reports cited in the material say the work is destroying potential evidence of war crimes and disturbing human remains because there are no protocols to separate victims’ bodies from the rubble or safeguard possible mass graves before new roads are paved.
The United States, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates are the only countries that have provided actual financing to the Peace Board so far, according to the reports.
Ramy Abdu, an activist cited in the material, said the board was providing what he described as a structural cover for ongoing land confiscation and displacement.
Gaza under prolonged occupation
The debris clearance is taking place as essential basic services in Gaza remain inoperable, according to the reports, while heavy machinery rapidly removes destroyed structures without allowing specialized rescue operations.
Since the Israeli offensive began in October 2023, at least 73,000 people have been killed and more than 172,000 injured in Gaza, according to figures provided in the press material. Most of those killed and injured are women and children, while thousands of people remain missing beneath collapsed structures.
The rapid removal of rubble has also made it difficult for survivors to determine the whereabouts of relatives who may have been killed or held in secret military prisons, according to the reports.
Humanitarian missions cited in the material say Israeli forces have intensified what they describe as a systematic campaign of destruction in areas of Gaza under direct Israeli control over the past 10 months.
The reports say Israeli forces have demolished what remained of buildings, burned fields and destroyed cities and agricultural communities in areas that have become almost completely depopulated.
According to the material, the alleged ultimate objective is the displacement of Gaza’s two million residents and the establishment of Israeli settlements on the territory.
