“The passing of Franco Fontana deeply pains me. I was fortunate enough to know him personally and I fondly keep many of his publications, proof of an artist who indelibly marked the history of contemporary photography,” said the mayor of Modena, Massimo Mezzetti, on his social media.

Fontana (Cognento, 1933) was one of the great masters of contemporary art photography, endowed with a style inspired by expressionism and minimalism characterized by highly saturated colors with which he enhanced the impact of his images.

His ‘trademark’ began to consolidate in the early 1970s, when he adopted an essential style with which he transformed his landscapes or scenes of everyday life into almost geometric figures, playing with their angles and shadows through his lens.

The Italian thus revolutionized art photography, not only by using color when other artists rejected it, but also by elevating it to an authentic narrative element.

His photographs have been or are exhibited in more than fifty museums around the world, from Tokyo or Seoul to London, Paris, Buenos Aires, New York, Moscow, Rome or Valencia.

In addition, Fontana collaborated with numerous publications such as ‘Time’ or ‘Vogue’ magazines and worked on several advertising campaigns for brands such as Fiat, Volkswagen, Kodak or Sony.

One of his most remembered photos, a maritime landscape that, with the horizon, forms a background of three strips with different shades of blue, has been published as a farewell on his own Instagram profile, where the master has almost 50,000 followers.
