Nepalese authorities have recovered 675 bodies after Wednesday’s flood in the Bhote Koshi basin, raising the total number of deaths between Nepal and Tibet to 682. In addition, nearly 3,000 people remain missing on both sides of the border.

The latest balance published by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) sets at 675 the bodies found in its territory, most of them located in Chitwan and Nawalparasi East, in the lower part, where the mass of water and stones dragged the victims.

The Nepalese agency estimated that 2,418 people remain registered as incommunicado or missing, including 589 foreign citizens and 933 workers from hydroelectric projects in the area.

The saturation of morgues and the rapid deterioration of bodies recovered from rivers has forced local authorities, such as in the Nawalparasi East (Nawalpur) district, to begin massive DNA sampling before proceeding to bury unidentified or unrecognizable bodies in community forest areas.

Meanwhile, the emergency teams deployed, which number in the thousands, are trying to continue their work on a hardened mud surface that appears to have buried dozens of people.

The Nepalese government has requested international assistance in forensic matters and cadaver conservation, as well as the deployment of technical teams to try to rescue hundreds of workers who are feared to be trapped in flooded tunnels of hydroelectric power plants in the basin.
