Every day, President Claudia Sheinbaum gives a morning presidential press conference and Mexico Solidarity Media posts English language summaries, translated by Mexico Solidarity’s Pedro Gellert. Previous press conference summaries are available here.
Cabeza de Vaca Could Not Run for Office If He Is a FugitiveFormer Supreme Court Justice Arturo Zaldívar explained that if former Tamaulipas Governor Francisco García Cabeza de Vaca has a pending arrest warrant and remains outside the country to evade justice, he is a fugitive and cannot run for office. An arrest warrant alone is not sufficient; it must be proven that he has evaded justice.
More Screening Measures to Block Criminals from Running for OfficeBy 2027, political parties will be able to voluntarily request that the National Electoral Institute (INE) review information on their pre-candidates, those who seek their nomination to run for public office. The INE will consult with the Federal Attorney General’s Office (FGR), the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF), and Security to identify potential candidates’ possible risks or criminal ties.
García Luna’s Multi-Million-Dollar Scheme Before the CourtsBetween 2008 and 2018, companies linked to former Minister of Public Security Genaro García Luna received more than US$403 million. The UIF reported the case in 2019: there were 61 arrest warrants served, 17 arrests made, and a judgment issued for US$578.5 million against the Weinberg family, García Luna’s business partners.
What Was Taken From the People Returns to the PeopleMexico recovered nearly 100 million pesos (US$5.89 million) from the García Luna-Weinberg case, and it was announced that the funds will be used to improve schools in the Montaña region of Guerrero. It was noted that the case helps “expose the hypocrisy” of those who defended García Luna.
From Calderón’s War to PeacebuildingPresident Claudia Sheinbaum recalled that under ex-president Felipe Calderón, homicides rose from 27 to more than 70 per day and asked: “What does ‘war’ mean? They were exceptional circumstances […] there was a license to kill.” Today, crime is combated through justice and by addressing its root causes.
Mexican Talent Makes History on the World StageSheinbaum congratulated Kenia Lechuga on winning the gold medal at the World Rowing Championship in Amsterdam. The President acknowledged the promotion of high-performance sports and the international achievements of children in mathematics and robotics.
