Grace Stephanie Calero Cabanilla and her daughter Giulianna Mía Carriel Calero were violently arrested by ICE on Aug. 20 while hospitalized following a car crash in Kissimmee, Florida. Cabanilla says her 19-year-old daughter suffered injuries to her arm and had a seizure while in the hospital. According to family members, Calero was still under pain sedation when ICE agents approached her bedside. Just days later, the two decided to self-deport to Ecuador, after being transferred to from jail to jail. “We were transferred to three different kinds of jails. That was when I said: 'No, my daughter could die here … That was when I made the decision to return,” Cabanilla said. She recalled that their car flipped over four times in the accident, and told local media she signed a request for self-deportation out of concern for Calero. Neither Cabanilla nor Calero had a criminal history in the US. Cabanilla had a pending asylum case and a work permit, while Calero has a visa that is valid until 2030, according to their family.
