About 157,050 women and girls are facing difficulties accessing food, water, health care, and protection services.
On Friday, UN Women warned that about 157,050 women and girls in the Nepalese districts of Rasuwa and Nuwakot have been directly or indirectly affected by Wednesday’s floods.

Currently, they are having difficulty accessing food, water, health care and protection services. Additionally, they face particularly high risks of violence, exploitation, and trafficking.
“The full scale of these horrific floods is still emerging. What we do know is that existing risks for women and girls skyrocket when disasters hit. More women and girls are exploited and abused,” said Patricia Fernandez-Pacheco, UN Women representative to Nepal.
“Women and girls go hungry and without medicine when resources are scarce. There is even evidence from previous disasters to suggest women are more likely to die than men,” she added.
Today, officials in Nepal confirm that the death toll from Wednesday’s flash flood has BALLOONED to 538.
According to the Red Cross, more than 90,000 people have been affected by the disaster.

In the districts of Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha and Chitwan, approximately one in three women is illiterate, which makes it difficult to access information about aid, registration processes and requests for assistance. In Bagmati province, one in three households is headed by a woman, and one-third of them depend on remittances, a source of income that is under pressure.
Currently, UN Women is working with the Nepalese government and other humanitarian organizations to ensure women and girls have access to essential services and protection, as well as participation in recovery efforts.
The multilateral agency is calling for US$2 million to assist those affected, with the idea that part of the funds will go toward a community kitchen initiative, which would provide emergency food and help create employment opportunities in the recovery.
On Friday, Nepal raised the number of missing people to 1,924. They include 933 workers at hydroelectric power plants and more than 100 members of security forces and customs personnel. The count includes 622 tourists: 473 foreigners and 149 Nepalese citizens residing abroad. So far, Nepal has reported 579 bodies recovered, while China has raised the death toll on the Tibetan side to five.
