On Friday, the Kingdom of Tooro confirmed that King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, its traditional monarch, died Thursday night at the age of 34.

Tooro’s Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong announced the news on social media, expressing “deep sadness” and stating that the heir would be presented according to tradition.
Until now, it had only been reported that the monarch was in “critical condition,” with calls for prayers from the Batoro people. Oyo became the world’s youngest king on September 12, 1995, inheriting the throne at just three years old after the death of his father.
During his three decades on the throne, he spearheaded projects focused on youth, education, healthcare, environmental conservation, and cultural heritage, which consolidated his influence as a traditional authority.

He never married nor had a queen consort, despite the pleas of his mother and the Anglican clergy. The Kingdom of Tooro, with its capital at Fort Portal, is one of the five traditional kingdoms recognized by the Ugandan Constitution.
The Kingdom has no political power but wields significant cultural influence among the Batoro people. It was founded in 1830 by Prince Kaboyo, abolished in 1967 by Milton Obote, and restored again in 1995 by Yoweri Museveni, though without political authority.
Oyo’s death marks a pivotal moment for Tooro, which must define its succession and preserve the continuity of its traditions amid national turmoil.
