Nepal’s flood death toll climbed to 392 according to Thursday’s report, with about 1,400 people missing including some 500 foreign nationals, as rescue teams worked along the border with China.
Police released the updated toll on August 27, lifting the count from the 359 registered in an earlier report.
The disaster hit the border district of Rasuwa, where the Bhote Koshi river broke over its channel after a massive surge of water and sediment. The police report places about 1,400 people on the missing list, on both sides of the frontier.

Officials fear the river could swell again while rescue operations continue. The danger keeps crews working against the clock in communities downstream, where the extent of damage to homes and public works remains under evaluation.

The catastrophe began when a glacier collapsed in the high mountain zone, sending an overflowing mass of water onto the riverbed. Measurements by the U.S. Geological Survey ruled out a seismic origin and confirmed the sudden flood came from the border area.
The scope of the emergency spans both sides of the frontier. On the Chinese side, authorities have confirmed three deaths, and officials from both countries are keeping the casualty record under permanent binational monitoring.

Foreign Visitors Accounted For
Among the missing, police count around 500 foreign citizens who were traveling through the region when the flood struck. The Nepal Tourism Council confirmed that 31 international visitors who had been cut off by the collapse of main roads were rescued alive.
Government agencies are coordinating logistics to get urgent humanitarian aid to the families affected by the catastrophe. Rural communities are still being evaluated to determine the full extent of the damage to homes and public works, and that assessment is expected to shape the next phase of the response.
