The National Meteorological Center issued a red alert, indicating that Saudel had intensified into a strong typhoon with winds of 162 kilometers per hour, located 320 kilometers east of Wenzhou.

The system is moving west-southwest and could make landfall between Friday morning and midday on the coastal strip between Zhejiang and Fujian provinces.

If Saudel hits Zhejiang directly, it will be the third to make landfall there this year, equaling the province’s 2004 record of three typhoon landfalls in a single year.

The airports in Wenzhou reported 114 canceled flights, while airports in Ningbo announced the suspension of operations starting at 11:30 p.m. local time due to the typhoon’s impact.

The rains of Narra increased the risk of floods, landslides, and waterlogging, forcing the evacuation of 3,287 people in Guangdong province, in addition to the 54,000 evacuated in Guangxi province.

In Taiwan, the outer bands of Typhoon Saudel will bring rain through Friday. Meanwhile, the China Weather Service (CWA) issued a marine alert, although the typhoon’s northerly track offers some relief.
