Now that right-winger Vicente Fox Quesada has come out in defense of Ernesto Ruffo Appel and in an open campaign against Morena —ahead of the upcoming 2027 elections—, and even claimed that he saved Andrés Manuel from the removal of his immunity in 2005, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo stated that the PAN member is a traitor to democracy.
In this regard, she recalled that Fox Quesada not only directly promoted the removal of immunity, but that in 2006 he operated the electoral fraud against López Obrador, to impose Felipe Calderón in the Presidency.
Sheinbaum considered it incredible that Fox now speaks of a lack of democracy and charges that “we are at the worst moment,” because it was he who, during his term, operated against the people’s decision at the ballot box. Regarding the right-wing politician’s remarks about AMLO’s removal of immunity, the president explained that he invented the crimes for which they sought to try López Obrador.
“The PRI had been, had placed the presidents practically throughout the 20th century, obviously after the Revolution; and for the first time there is going to be a change of government [in the year 2000], a new political party: the PAN is going to reach the Presidency. And the people, excited that a change is coming, vote for Fox. And one of Fox’s central elements was democracy, right?, the transition to democracy, because it went from Vargas Llosa’s “perfect dictatorship” to the “transition to democracy.” [But] four years later, Fox invents a crime for López Obrador so that he could not participate in the 2006 election.”
She recalled that the false crime was that, as head of government of Mexico City, López Obrador violated an injunction. “What injunction? Or why did he violate an injunction? Because there was an injunction from a private party over the construction of a street to a hospital. In the first place, it was shown that he never violated the injunction. But, in the second [place], well, it was a street to a hospital. That is, it was not like, ‘hey, what a terrible crime.’ But anyway, they invented the crime. They took it to the Public Prosecutor, and a judge said he ‘was guilty,’ despite the demonstration that he was not. And then comes the removal of López Obrador’s immunity so that they could put him in jail.”
The president recalled that it was not Fox who saved Andrés Manuel, but rather the mobilized people who forced the government to back down. “And what happens? Well, at that moment in Mexico City he had a lot of popularity, because he had introduced the Wellbeing Programs, so the social programs, the Elderly Pension was created in the City. So, he was head of government. They criticized him terribly for having established the Elderly Pension and others… also the Support for People with Disabilities, his two main programs. And the people loved him a lot, love him a lot, but in the City very much so. When the removal of immunity comes, well, the people take to the streets, gigantic demonstrations […].”
At her morning press conference —and asked by Contralínea about the PRIAN politicians who did so much damage to the country in the neoliberal era and who now, openly and covertly, take part in the dirty media war—, she added that the protests spread across the whole country, “because throughout the country word had already spread: ‘oh, there’s a person, López Obrador, who is governing Mexico City very well!, he has an Elderly Pension, People with Disabilities, he’s building a second deck, he’s fixing the Historic Center.’ And the people came out massively to support him.”
For that reason, she stressed, “Fox had no choice but to reverse the crime, the best demonstration that it was a falsehood. Ah, López Obrador decides to run for the Presidency of the Republic in 2006. And Fox is the architect of the 2006 electoral fraud, so that López Obrador would not make it. […] Imagine how the country would be today, imagine, since then, if López Obrador had fortunately governed from 2006 to 2012. But, well, the people of Mexico decided, in 2018, to say ‘now yes, let the real change come,’ and López Obrador arrived in 2018.”
Sheinbaum Pardo remarked ironically that now Fox is very active, supposedly for democracy.
Since then we gave it a name: “Fox, traitor to democracy.” He betrayed democracy, and now he’s the one who talks about democracy.
