Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo reported record foreign direct investment and a solid peso during a morning press conference, while outlining economic gains nearly two years into her administration.
Foreign direct investment reached 34.968 billion dollars in the first half of the year, with sustained growth since 2018, according to the president. She also noted the minimum wage has risen 154% in real and nominal terms since 2018, from 2,800 pesos per month to more than 9,500 pesos.
On that matter, she further criticized opponents of the wage increase, saying they claimed it would cause inflation, reduce investment and devalue the peso. “In reality, they did not want to raise workers’ wages in order to benefit a few,” she said.

Based on the National Occupation Survey, Sheinbaum said that for the first time in history the country reached 60 million Mexicans with jobs. She confirmed the rebound in GDP, the increase in household consumption and the rise in light vehicle sales to 885,000 units, reiterating that the exchange rate stands at 16.97 pesos per dollar, positioning it among the strongest currencies in the world.

As part of activities leading up to her second government report, the president announced that 14 institutional spots will be broadcast to account for government actions. She confirmed that next Tuesday she will deliver an official message in the Central Courtyard of the National Palace. She will also tour all federal entities from Thursday to Sunday over a period of three to four weeks, closing with an event in the Zócalo focused on Mexico City, so it will not constitute a national event.
Morning press conferences will not be held on September 1, 15 and 16, resuming meetings with the media in the states on Fridays.
