U.S. president denies targeting French-speaking people while lashing out at PM Carney.
On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump lashed out at Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney while attempting to deny his attacks on Canada’s French-speaking population.

“I would never interfere with Canadians speaking French! In fact, I have never even thought of doing such a stupid thing. This lie was made up by a weak and ineffective Prime Minister in an attempt to gain political support, which he has totally lost, from the people of Quebec. I love French Canadians!” he said.
Previously, however, the Republican leader further inflamed the controversy by suggesting that he plans to use the name “Lake America” to refer to Lake Ontario, which borders his country and Canada.
“The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we don’t expect to doing much business with Ontario any longer,” he posted on Truth Social.

Over the weekend, Trump, who has repeatedly referred to Canada as the “51st state” of the U.S., imposed 50% tariffs on about $20 billion worth of Canadian products.
The Canadian prime minister called the conditions added by Washington in the “last hours” “unacceptable” and promised that his country would respond “dollar for dollar” with tariffs that would take effect Sept. 8.
Carney pointed out that the terms proposed by Washington threatened Canadian sovereignty, would have limited its ability to negotiate agreements with other countries and harmed strategic sectors such as the automotive industry.
Among the Trump administration’s demands, according to media reports, was exempting U.S. platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video from rules requiring them to promote the visibility of Canadian content, including productions in French. Canada considered that demand a “red line” because it would have given Washington influence over its cultural and digital policy.
On Monday, Trump intensified his trade war by threatening to raise tariffs to 50% on all automobiles, trucks, auto parts and steel coming from Canada starting Jan. 1, 2027.
