In the Snail Extinction Prevention Program lab, behind a green door in a small green trailer, little mollusks move across differently-shaded green leaves four times their size, their translucent antennae wiggling and flicking. Extinct in the wild, the snails play at survival in the trailer, eating and reproducing, practicing for their reintroduction back into their habitats. As a greyish yellow snail almost slides off the leaf it sits on, the large, white pad of a finger gently moves it back. The snail wiggles its antennae enthusiastically, finally reoriented to the leaf; its whole body spans the finger’s tip.
