On Monday, Mexican Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco agreed to strengthen cooperation in science and technology with South Korea during a meeting in Seoul with his counterpart, Cho Hyun.

According to the South Korean Foreign Ministry, Velasco concurred on the need to bolster cooperation in innovation, artificial intelligence, digital transformation, the space industry, and defense,
Cho also requested that South Korean companies be facilitated in importing Mexican crude oil, as part of Seoul’s efforts to diversify its energy supply in light of the conflict in the Middle East.
The South Korean Foreign Minister also asked that the review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) consider his country’s companies’ concerns and proposed reviewing the Investment Protection Agreement.

Velasco is also scheduled to meet with South Korean President’s National Security Advisor Wi Sung-lac and with Vice President of the Science Diplomacy Center So Young Kim.
Both nations have intensified their industrial ties in recent years, a rapprochement also reflected in the popularity of South Korean culture, music, and cuisine in Mexico.
The bilateral dialogue reinforces Mexico’s position as a key partner in Latin America for South Korea, as both countries seek to expand their collaboration in the innovation and energy sectors.
