Kazakhstan’s ruling party, Adilet (Justice), has comfortably won the elections to the new unicameral Parliament (Kurultai) of the largest Central Asian republic, according to exit polls.

According to the polls, whose results were released by television, Adilet would have received the support of more than 71% of voters, compared to just over 6% for the Aúl party, which would be in second place.

Three other parties – Respublica, the Ak Zhol Democratic Party of Kazakhstan, and the National Social Democratic Party – also surpassed the 5% threshold required to enter the Kurultai.

Kazakhstan’s voter turnout in the Kurultai elections reached 65.37% by 16:00 local time.

According to the Central Election Commission, 8,240,336 voters had cast their ballots, out of 12,605,788 registered voters.
Turnout was 53.12% at 14:00 and 17.96% at 10:00.

The People’s Party of Kazakhstan and the Green Party would not have received the necessary support to enter the new Parliament, which for the first time will be unicameral.

According to electoral authorities, more than 9 million Kazakhs out of 12.6 million eligible voters participated in the elections.

The new legislature, whose creation was approved in a constitutional referendum in March, will have 145 deputies, elected for a five-year term.
