Mexico City. Mexico and Chile are proposing to review new opportunities to improve trade and attract more investment, the Ministry of Economy (SE) reported this Saturday.
In a statement, the agency said that during the Free Trade Commission (CLC) of the Free Trade Agreement between the two countries, the evolution of the bilateral economic relationship was reviewed and initiatives aimed at strengthening trade integration, encouraging investment and promoting economic cooperation between the parties were addressed.
At the meeting of the agreement’s highest administrative body, the strength of the bilateral economic ties and the value of the FTA as a tool to boost trade, investment and the generation of new opportunities were highlighted.
During the session, the authorities reviewed the performance of trade exchange and investment flows, as well as the challenges and opportunities for deepening the bilateral economic relationship. The two nations also exchanged information on various regulatory, sanitary and phytosanitary matters of mutual interest.
“Mexico and Chile are strengthening their trade relationship and reaffirming their commitment to a more competitive and inclusive economic integration, through the full use of the Treaty’s potential, the strengthening of cooperation and trade facilitation mechanisms, as well as the conditions that allow greater opportunities to be generated for businesses, workers and consumers in both nations,” said the undersecretary of foreign trade, Luis Rosendo Gutiérrez Romano.
“The economic relationship between Chile and Mexico, built on more than two decades of free trade thanks to our FTA, has enormous opportunities to keep deepening. We want to take this link to a new stage, taking advantage of the complementarity of our economies and exploring new opportunities in trade, investment, services, the digital economy and value chains. This Commission is a key body for reviewing those opportunities for deepening and for continuing to build a more integrated economic relationship that generates greater value for both countries,” said Chile’s undersecretary of international economic relations, Paula Estévez.
In the same Commission setting, Chile and Mexico signed Decision Number 11, which adopts the transposition of the specific Rules of Origin to the 2022 Harmonized System. This provides greater legal certainty and makes it easier for economic operators in both countries to correctly apply the provisions of the trade pact.
Both delegations agreed to move forward with a work agenda aimed at strengthening technical and economic cooperation, including the creation of a mechanism for the exchange of trade statistics that would make it possible to assess the use of the agreements in force and to support decision-making on trade policy. They also instructed that joint work continue in order to identify opportunities to develop global and regional value chains, with a view to boosting productive complementarity and economic integration between Chile and Mexico.
The delegations reaffirmed their commitment to deepening the bilateral economic relationship and to strengthening the institutional mechanisms of the agreement, for the benefit of growth, competitiveness and development in both countries.
