“We will not stop until our demands are met. We will continue the struggle.” Production lines ground to a halt across Hyundai Motor’s Ulsan, Asan, and Jeonju plants in South Korea on Friday as workers staged an eight-hour strike over stalled wage negotiations. This was the union’s first full-day stoppage in a decade and marks a significant escalation following the 16th round of talks that occurred on August 18. Those talks ended without resolution. While Hyundai has proposed an 89,000 won ($64) monthly base pay increase and a performance bonus of 350% of monthly salary, these still fall short of the union’s demands. Workers are calling for higher wages commensurate with the company’s profitability, retirement linked to the state pension eligibility age, and the reinstatement of dismissed union members. Workers are already planning four-hour partial strikes on August 24 and 25.
