86 years ago, Leon Trotsky was murdered by a Stalinist agent. To mark this anniversary, we republish an article written by Ted Grant in 1990, the 50th anniversary of Trotsky’s assassination. Written in the midst of the crisis of Stalinism in Eastern Europe – in which many of the Stalinist regimes had already collapsed – which culminated in the collapse of the Soviet Union just a year later in 1991, Ted focuses in on one of Trotsky’s greatest theoretical achievements: his analysis of the degeneration of the October Revolution and the rise of Stalinism.
