The former president accused conservatives of spreading disinformation to destroy progressive forces.

On Tuesday, former Colombian President Gustavo Petro reaffirmed that he will remain in his homeland despite recent threats against him. He also denied rumors of an alleged arrest or extradition against him.

Through his social media accounts, the Historical Pact leader rejected disinformation campaigns seeking to isolate him and destroy progressive political and social forces.

“I have not disappeared. I have been in the country and I will not leave except intermittently. We must build the great alliance of the people and the world for life.

I know that they have caused me a great deal of harm with the false news that I had been arrested and extradited. They also threatened my loved ones, my daughter Antonella, and important people in the government with legal proceedings and with the OFAC list.

Their objective has been to isolate me and destroy progressivism through fear and the isolation of people. This is not the time to isolate ourselves, but to come together. There will be no extradition or trial against me because I have not committed any crime.

Fear must retreat so that we do not allow them to dominate the country and grab our natural resources. Fear and lies are the foundations of fascism, and their objective is to plunder through paralysis. I only need the love of the people and the beauty of my country,” the former Colombian president posted on X.

These statements come as far-right Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella, a U.S. citizen who has declared himself an admirer of Israel, seeks to structure a discrediting campaign against Gustavo Petro.

On Tuesday, De la Espriella delivered to Attorney General Luz Camargo the “Book of Truth,” which compiles 82 allegations of alleged corruption during the Petro administration (2022-2026).

These “possible patterns of corruption” were allegedly detected through an analysis of documents during the “presidential transition” process, which did not officially take place because of De la Espriella’s refusal to meet with Petro and his team.
