Cuba’s Civil Defense and the National Seismological Research Center (CENAIS) debunked a false automated mobile phone alert this Tuesday, confirming that no earthquake occurred in the Caribbean nation.
During the afternoon of August 18, mobile phone users across Cuba received an automatic earthquake warning on their Android cellular devices. The notification, which was generated by international automated operating systems, spread rapidly and sparked immediate concern among the population.
However, domestic monitoring stations quickly verified that the national territory remained completely calm, with no tectonic movements recorded.

The chief of investigations at National Seismological Research Center (CENAIS), Dr. Enrique Arango, spoke directly to local broadcaster Tele Turquino to address the situation. He assured the public that the National Seismological Service did not detect any seismic event during the specified timeframe. Arango formally characterized the automated digital notification as “totally false” and lamented the widespread confusion it caused.
Technological experts noted that the alert likely originated from automated algorithms operated by foreign tech corporations like Google, which use built-in smartphone accelerometers to estimate seismic waves. While designed to provide rapid warnings, these decentralized networks frequently trigger false alarms by misinterpreting local vibrations. This bypasses the regulatory oversight of sovereign state emergency structures, which are legally responsible for civil protection, and instead creates unnecessary public panic.
En horas de la tarde, varios dispositivos móviles recibieron una supuesta alerta de sismo.

Text reads: “In the afternoon, several mobile devices received a suspected earthquake alert. We reiterate that this information is false. No seismic event has been recorded in the national territory.”
Official Protocols Urged
In response to the technological glitch, the Civil Defense and the National Seismological Research Center urged citizens to ignore unverified notifications and rely strictly on official state reports. Cuban emergency officials emphasized that public safety management requires centralized coordination to prevent chaos.
“In the event of any real emergency, our official systems and communication channels will activate the corresponding protocols in a timely manner,” Arango pointed out. He reiterated that the National Seismological Service maintains a continuous network of monitoring stations operating 24 hours a day to safeguard the population.
The Caribbean island, particularly its eastern region, sits adjacent to the active Cayman Trench fault system, making earthquake monitoring a highly critical national security priority. Because of this vulnerability, Cuba has developed robust civil defense structures recognized globally for their efficiency in disaster prevention.
The Cuban state has historically prioritized the development of its own meteorological and seismological infrastructure to guarantee technological sovereignty. By utilizing a localized network of highly sensitive sensors, the National Seismological Research Center can distinguish actual seismic activity from minor environmental vibrations with absolute precision, a capability that generic global algorithms lack.
National authorities warned that relying on third-party mobile applications during geological emergencies can disrupt evacuation plans and hinder institutional rescue efforts. The government confirmed that its communication infrastructure remains fully prepared to broadcast verified alerts instantly through television, radio, and official state digital portals.
Both the National Seismological Research Center and the Civil Defense reaffirmed their commitment to public transparency, urging the population to maintain tranquility and verify all emergency information through authorized national agencies.
