Here’s the recording for the first session of the second round of our Substack philosophy class for paid subscribers, where we’ll be reading G.A. Cohen’s book Self-Ownership, Freedom, and Equality. We started to look at the first essay (“Robert Nozick and Wilt Chamberlain: how patterns preserve liberty”) today. Next week, we’ll finish talking about that, as well as looping back and discussing Cohen’s introduction to the book. (Also: Should people be interested, here’s a Jacobin article I wrote on this Cohen essay a couple years ago, covering some of the same points we hit in today’s class.) Oh, and remember that this and all the previous class recordings so far (so, all the Nozick ones too) can be found here.
