Tens of thousands gathered in London’s Trafalgar Square on Monday to honor and demand accountability for Jason Arday, with some calling his death a “lynching by British media.” Arday, Cambridge’s youngest Black professor in the university’s history, was found dead at just 41 on Friday, following a relentless media campaign over disputed plagiarism accusations. The campaign was ignited by self-described “race realist” anti-DEI advocate Nathan Cofnas, who publicized on his Substack in late July allegations that Arday plagiarized parts of his PhD thesis. Cofnas also called into question details of Arday’s life, along with his achievements and charity work, accusing him of embellishing his CV for academic gain. Liverpool John Moores University, which awarded Arday his doctorate, cleared him of plagiarism charges. But Cambridge, which initially called the allegations a “vile campaign” to undermine Arday’s credibility, opened a review of his appointment amid the controversy. Arday resigned on August 5, citing a “profound toll” on him and his family.
