During the ceremony held at the Jose Marti Memorial in the Cuban capital, tribute was paid to the National Hero and to the historic leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro, during the year marking his birth centenary.
Rolando Travieso, head of the Social Sector Support Department of the Communist Party of Cuba’s Central Committee, presented the national flag to track and field athletes Keyla Reve and Grabiel Leon.
The event was attended by Ines Chapman, Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Cuba; Omara Durand, a Hero of Labor of the Caribbean nation; and Osvaldo Vento, president of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER).
The multi-sport event, scheduled for August 21–27, will take place in the Ecuadorian city of Guayaquil, marking a historic milestone for the sports movement of the largest Caribbean island, which will compete in the games for the first time in its history.
