By all indications he was indeed a fraud. However, the fraud was made possible because a bunch of racists who think of themselves as captains of progressivism thought they had the holy grail of virtue signals and promoted his story. If he hadn’t been black they would have called him out on it instead.
A real progressive knows that it’s just as racist to give his lies a pass because he’s black as it would have been to shut him out of academia for his race. Just taking something as true without even trying to verify it is anathema to science.
