Ronaldo

Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo has sparked speculation about his future after revealing that 2026 could be his final year on the football pitch, in a statement that opens the door to the end of an exceptional career spanning more than two decades.

Speaking during an interview with Vogue magazine, Ronaldo said that retirement was now on his mind, adding: “This might be my last year in football, and I want to leave an exceptional legacy.”

The end is drawing near for Ronaldo… but with no set date

Despite the frankness of the statement, Ronaldo has not officially announced his retirement, as he used the word “might”, meaning that the decision to continue or leave has not been finalised.

The Portugal captain continues his career with Saudi club Al-Nassr, having managed to maintain his competitive edge despite his advancing age, and remains one of the biggest names in world football.

The idea of retirement was not the only topic Ronaldo discussed, as he revealed that he has clear visions of the life that awaits him after football.

The Portuguese star explained that he wants to travel more and enjoy his time, as well as playing padel, whilst recognising that stepping away from football will leave a huge void in his life after so many years spent on the pitch.

A legacy beyond the numbers

After a career packed with titles, awards and records with Sporting Lisbon, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus, and Al-Nassr, it seems that Ronaldo has begun to think about how he wants to be remembered after his retirement.

The word ‘perhaps’ remains the most significant in Ronaldo’s statement; the Portuguese legend has not ruled out another season, but at the same time he has, for the first time, clearly acknowledged that the end of his footballing journey is drawing near, and that he wants to leave the game leaving behind an exceptional legacy.
