Brazil’s Lula da Silva officially kicked off his race for a fourth presidential term on Sunday, holding his campaign launch at the Estádio Primeiro de Maio in São Paulo. The stadium, once called Vila Euclides, was the venue for metalworkers’ strikes that first brought Lula to national prominence as a union leader in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
