The Thiel Macro LLC fund, owned by tech entrepreneur Peter Thiel, acquired a $76 million stake in Vista Energy, Argentina’s largest oil exporter, according to a regulatory filing.

The transaction positions the Argentine company as the second largest holding in the fund’s portfolio, second only to Amazon, and represents the only non-U.S. company included in the disclosure, a fact that reinforces the strategic importance Thiel assigns to the oil company.

At the close of the second quarter, the fund held almost 1.2 million shares of Vista Energy, in a context of the full reopening of international capital markets to Argentine companies.

The investment is directly linked to the development of Vaca Muerta and, in particular, to the progress of the VMOS pipeline and port, key infrastructure for expanding crude oil export capacity in which Vista is actively involved. The project, slated to begin operations next year, is considered by analysts to be a cornerstone for consolidating the growth of Argentina’s energy sector.

Thiel’s interest in Argentina extends beyond financial considerations. In recent months, the businessman acquired a residence in Buenos Aires, enrolled his daughters in schools in the city, and participated in chess tournaments at a club in the Almagro neighborhood. In April, he met with President Javier Milei, with whom he shares libertarian ideology. According to officials present at the meeting, Thiel inquired about “the sustainability of economic reforms and the wealth tax.”

The text reads, “À New York, l’action de Vista a progressé après que Peter Thiel a révélé une participation de plusieurs millions de dollars, dans un contexte de boom du pétrole de schiste en Argentine.”

The technology entrepreneur has a long history linked to far-right libertarianism and homophobia. One of his most frequently repeated statements is that he does not believe freedom and democracy “are compatible.”

Thiel also plans to participate in the “Winds of Change” forum, organized by the Liberty and Progress Foundation, which will take place on September 1 and 2 in Buenos Aires. His presence was interpreted by analysts as a sign of interest in the reform process and the opening of the energy sector.

His new company, General Matter, seeks to produce HALEU, a type of enriched uranium for nuclear energy, and has already received funding from the U.S. Department of Energy. In this context, the investment in Vista Energy represents a commitment to the energy base that will power industries such as artificial intelligence, whose electricity demand is growing globally.

With this transaction, Peter Thiel deepens his presence in Argentina, combining strategic investments, personal activities, and participation in economic forums related to the energy sector.
