“This is an occasion for us to remember and pay tribute to Fidel, a great friend, a dear comrade of the Vietnamese people, a leader who gave Vietnam special feelings and firm, consistent support during the most difficult moments in its history,” Thu Thao stated, in an atmosphere of Vietnam-Cuba brotherhood and friendship.

Thu Thao emphasized that this friendship is not only manifested in declarations or historical milestones, but also in concrete actions, in sharing during difficult times, and in the mutual support between the two nations. “An entire generation of Vietnamese grew up hearing stories about the solidarity and affection that Cuba showed to Vietnam. We are the generation that came after; we didn’t directly experience those difficult years, but we have inherited an invaluable legacy: the friendship, loyalty, and profound solidarity that the Cuban people have always shown to the Vietnamese people,” he recalled.

For his part, Polanco thanked the Cuban government and people for the donation and described it as a significant gesture of solidarity. The diplomat noted that the donation comes at a time when Cuba is facing a very difficult situation caused by the tightening of the blockade, the energy embargo, and the threats of military aggression from the Vietnamese government.

“Please accept our infinite gratitude, dear comrades, for this new gesture of friendship and solidarity, which demonstrates once again that Cuba and Vietnam, united, will prevail,” remarked Polanco, who described the donation as a demonstration of the unwavering solidarity of the Communist Party, the Vietnamese state, and the Vietnamese people with the Cuban cause.

A gesture outside of protocol

Beyond protocol, Polanco requested to have his picture taken with Thu Thao outside the embassy, in front of a photograph displayed on the fence showing Fidel Castro and General Nguyen Thi Dinh during her visit to Cuba in 1974, when she was commander of the Armed Forces of the Liberation of South Vietnam.

Both Thi Dinh and the current president of the Red Cross are originally from Ben Tre, a territory in southern Vietnam that was the scene of a popular uprising in support of the 1968 Tet Offensive, and which was practically destroyed by US bombing.

Polanco also highlighted Do Thi Thu Thao’s historical connection with Cuba, her participation in campaigns to support the island from her native territory, in women’s organizations and now at the head of the Red Cross of Vietnam.

You left off “million” in that headline. Without it, Vietnam sounds helpful but utterly impoverished.
