The MPD upheld that the decision disregards the historic ties of solidarity between the two countries, particularly Cuba’s contribution to the training of young Dominicans in the fields of health, education, and sports.

“President Abinader forgets that it was Cuba that opened the doors to education in health and sports for many young Dominicans,” the organization stated.

The movement considered the measure a loss of sovereignty and questioned the Dominican government’s foreign policy, comparing it to the policy pursued during the 12-year tenure of former President Joaquín Balaguer.

“He also forgets that it is the most solidary people imaginable, sharing what they have and offering their creativity and ingenuity; yet now, this government repays such a dignified people with dishonor,” it asserted.

The leftist organization viewed the decision as an alignment of President Luis Abinader’s government with the Donald Trump administration’s policy toward Cuba; in response, the Maximiliano Gomez Eastern Regional Committee called for the preservation of national sovereignty and the maintenance of historic ties of cooperation and solidarity between the two Caribbean nations. jdt/car/mpv
