Chuy, who is also a member of the US House of Representatives, will participate this week in Montevideo in the progressive Pan-American Congress, which will bring together prominent political figures and nearly 100 parliamentarians from countries across the hemisphere.
Chuy responded to La Diaria newspaper regarding pressure from the United States to impose its immigration policy on third countries.
He stated that this dynamic of the administration of US President Donald Trump is very worrying because violent and imperialist actions are being taken without authorization from the US Congress.
He said Washington “is resorting to coercion to extract these political concessions from foreign governments. For example, we have seen the administration recently attempt to pressure Mexico and Uruguay to accept deported individuals.”
He stated that “progressive” members of Congress are taking action and demanding answers.
Congress must exercise its oversight function and put an end to these illegal actions by the administration.
Chuy rejected interference of the Donald Trump government in the Brazilian electoral process, a practice that, he noted, was repeated in Honduras and Colombia.
